It’s hard to find affordable permanent workspace in the Hague. For more than 20 years now, I’ve been working temporarily in old houses, former schools and ramshackle offices eligible for demolition. In the Netherlands 15 % of all office buildings are vacant, and the owners are happy to find artists and students occupying their places for the time being. That’s why it’s not very hard to find a new temporary place when a developer thinks it’s time for me to move. The low rent compensates the uncertainty. Obviously this vagrancy influences my work and makes me think about the reliability of what we call home.
